Vermiculture: Hands-On Learning

by: Fernando Jose G. Roa

On July 7, International Care Ministries treated 30 Sunday school children from the New Millennium Evangelical Church (NMEC), ages 10 to 14 years old, to their first-ever livelihood seminar for growing vegetables efficiently and healthily using vermiculture (worm farming).

The children, assisted by their Sunday school teachers, parents and members of their household learned how to grow their own organic vegetables in plastic bottles using a simple combination of garden soil and vermiculture.

ICM’s Livelihood trainer, Nelly Burce, showed everyone how easily a family can grow and eat pechay in just 4 weeks– a great boon to help low-income families create their own sustainable supply of nutritious and nourishing food. The event culminated with all the participants bringing home their plastic pots planted with the beginnings of their soon-to-be harvestable and edible pechay.
