Giving Sight To Reynanye Was Easy Because…

Reynanye is seven years old and lives with his mother Miraflor and four siblings in a poor community. In early 2015, Reynanye began having trouble with his vision. Despite the family’s financial situation, Miraflor made an eye appointment for Reynanye, where the young boy was diagnosed with major congenital cataracts. In August 2015, Reynanye underwent a successful cataract extraction surgery. Afterwards, he was prescribed antibiotic ophthalmic drops to take home and was given the date for a follow-up appointment where his recovery would be monitored.

However, the associated costs of the surgery had exhausted the family’s income, and Miraflor knew she would not be able to afford to pay for Reynanye’s scheduled follow-up. While many impoverished people would have no funds or no one to turn to for help, Miraflor was connected to ICM through the Transform program. A Transform graduate, Miraflor was now a counselor for the program.  Knowing the appointment was essential to her son’s vision, Miraflor approached the Transform Health Trainer to see if any funds were available to cover the cost of the check-up.

Thanks to the help of ICM donors, Reynanye was able to receive Medical Mercy Funds (MMF) that allowed him to attend the consultation. At the appointment, the on-site medical staff expressed concern regarding Reynanye’s height and signs related to malnutrition. ICM was able to provide Miraflor multivitamins and fortified rice packs for Reynanye. The MMF also covered the costs of two bottles of anti-inflammatory drops, which continued Reynanye’s healing.

Although the check-up indicated that Reynanye’s vision was improving, Miraflor was advised that temporary eyeglasses would speed up Reynanye’s recovery. Again, the purchase was possible because of the MMF.

ICM’s Medical Mercy Fund provided US$105 for Reynanye’s transportation costs, eyedrops, glasses, vitamins and food. Miraflor and her family are grateful to the generosity of the anonymous donors who contributed to the MMF, allowing ICM to assist patients like Reynanye regain their eyesight.

In the lives of many that live on subsistent level, one medical crisis can wipe out any progress made in the fight out of poverty. ICM works with families to help them remove as many barriers to quality health care as possible. In 2014-15, ICM assisted 61 patients with surgical needs and 1,892 patients with non-surgical needs.
